Writing Reference Bookshelf
A perfect gift, this reference shelf provides the print resources that every writer and rising college student needs within his or her reach—yes, even in today's Internet age. My recommended bookshelf includes:
- Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition
(currently the standard)—keep other dictionaries if you have a favorite, but this has long been the standard for legitimacy and spelling - a "Turabian"—the current Manual for Writers, the generic standard for decades (a different style guide can be substituted if the writer or student has specialty demands)
- a "Roget's"—I include the real thesaurus in my bookshelf, but I also recommend that writers collect as many dictionary-style thesauri as they can, and of all ages, too
- a desk encyclopedia
- a usage guide—I include Theodore Bernstein's The Careful Writer or an equally respected and time-tested manual
- a "grammar"—either Perrin's Handbook of Current English or a Harbrace College Handbook (or one of their descendants); no substitutions here!
- a current almanac
You could buy most of these resources independently, but for the price of $300US (including tax, if applicable, and continental S&H), I'll do the shopping and shipping for you—and throw in a desktop bookshelf to house them.
